The other day I went to a special publicviewing of Kennin-ji Temple.
It was an exhibition of one of the temples that are notusually open to the public. Sometimes they have special viewings at othertemples and shrines. Please go to it if you have an opportunity.

In high school, I had a good friend whose birthday was April 20th.We would always crack jokes about what he was going to do that day, because in North America, April 20th, also knownas 420 (four twenty) is considered the National Pot Smokers Day. (In other words, anotherexcuse for pot heads to openly smoke marijuana in public places)
In Japan,April 20th is the anniversary for the establishment of Japan Post in1871.
I have this little feature on my cell phone that displaysholidays of the world, but I guess the Japanese telecom companies didn’t knowwhat 420 stood for in the west!
I wascurious to find out more about the derivation of this holiday, so being theinternet junkie that I am, I googled it, and came up with a lot of truths andfalses concerning 420.
Myth: Police dispatch code for smoking pot is 420.
Fact: The number 420 is not police radio code foranything, anywhere. Checks of criminal codes suggest that the origin is neitherCalifornian nor federal. For instance, California Penal Code 420 defines as amisdemeanor the hindrance of use of public lands.
Myth: There are approximately 420 active chemicals inmarijuana.
Fact: There are approximately 315 active chemicals inmarijuana. This number goes up and down depending on which plant is used.
Myth: April 20th is National Pot Smokers Day.
Fact: Well, it is now; but that wasn't the origin.
Myth: April 20th is Hitler's birthday.
Fact: Yes, it is his birthday. But, as 420 started outas a time, not a date, his birthday had nothing to do with it.
Myth: April 20th is the date of the Columbine school shootings.
Fact: This happened after the term was already in use.
Myth: 4:20 is tea time for pot-smokers in Holland.
Fact: Tea time in Hollandis at 5:30 pm, or is it 2:30 pm? Seems no one is quite sure when the wonderfulpeople of Hollanddrink their tea.
Pretty crafty huh?
Let’s go dancing.

The other day, I was waiting to ride to work on the same 8 o’clockKeihan train to my office. Like every other morning, the same 60-something yearold dude with the outrageous comb-over in his wool pleated trousers was puffinghis cancer stick on the other side of the platform.
The young lady with the 1-point English textbook was in herown world, diligently repeating conversational phrases that we would never usein the native world.
“As cool as a cucumber..” “Its raining cats and dogs”…
Oh if someone could only teach her that nobody says “itsraining cats and dogs” anymore…
The young salary man in his spotless pin-stripe suite wasfiddling with his perfectly set hair and the group of high school student girlswere cracking up over some worry-free nonsense.
It was like every morning… the train came, I found a spacebetween the doors and the priority seats to place my bag down and start mymorning routine of “people watching.”
At the end of the bench seat, there was a young lady noddingoff while holding her umbrella in front of her. An overweight salary man thatlooked like he hadn’t showered in a couple days, maybe overworking, with foggyglasses from his natural body oils, I’m guessing about 45 years old, wasstanding in front of her. He kept himself standing by holding on to the trainstraps above. The man looked exhausted. He not once looked up; it seemed like hishead was dangling from his neck. I see he had fallen asleep as well, standingup. (You see a lot of this in Japan:Amazing to see them be able to wake up just in time for their stop)
Both of them had fallen asleep, as the train passed about 2stops. His body helplessly leaned over hers, as the train made somewhat of asharp turn.
The next moment, a blob of drool had fallen from his greasy disgustingmouth and accurately landed right on the back of the pretty young lady’s handthat was so gracefully placed on her pink and gold umbrella. In an instant, thegirl woke up, saw the drool, thinking it was her own, she quickly took her handand slurped the drool back into her own mouth….
Yeah… let that image sink in for bit…
Oh poor girl… little did she know..
She might as well French kissed the guy…
This has taught me never to fall asleep in a crowded morningrush hour train…. Ever!
