Special viewing of Kennin-ji Temple

The other day I went to a special publicviewing of Kennin-ji Temple.

It was an exhibition of one of the temples that are notusually open to the public. Sometimes they have special viewings at othertemples and shrines. Please go to it if you have an opportunity.

mixi vs. facebook

Mixi vs. Facebook

This morning as I was doing my routine internet surf, I came across my old Friendster page that I made back in high school. I remember the internet boom in from 97 - 99, I got started playing final fantasy 7 and joined a net forum to get tips and cheats to finish the game.
My first laptop was an IBM thinkpad 400Mhz Celeron processor…  A birthday/Christmas present from Dad.

I started doing mixi in 2005 after hearing the internet buzz about how cool it was. A great way to get connected with my fellow Jap network and practice a little Japanese as well.
Since its launch in 2004, the rapid growth of users had increased to 4.8 million by 2006 and eventually surpassing 10 million by 2008. A press release by the head honchos of the corp, stated they are expecting that number to triple in the next 2 years. Which tops the charts for social networking services in Japan by a mile.
Facebook on the other hand… is astronomical.
Surpassing the divine google of traffic and time on site.

The disadvantages I find with mixi which is different from most American based SNS is the lack of expression from the users.
Most active users don’t even put up profile pictures of themselves. And the “foot print” feature which shows who’s been to your page makes users hesitant to browse other people’s profiles. As if the Japanese weren’t shy enough already.

I set up an RSS feed on my old mixi account but realized there’s no point cuz them nips wouldn’t be able to comprehend my blog entries anyway!

In conclusion. Facebook rules. Mixi drools.

Got Beef??

One of my favorite eats in Japanmust be Yakiniku.
Juicy, mouth-watering, meaty goodness with a beer and some kimchi on the side.
What better way to satisfy that greedy monster inside my belly after an intense match of tennis on a Sunday afternoon?
“Yakiniku” in Japanese just means “cooked meat”. Originally this style of cuisine came from our friendly neighbors in Korea. There is an assortment of seasoning and garnishes. Its not just chunks of meat cooking over flames… sometimes its even raw! =)
Hmm mmm yum. Try it before you judge it!

One of my clients in Kyoto is running a high-end fancy Yakiniku restaurant, coincidentally located right next to my brother and his wife’s apartment building.
My brother and his wife went there for their wedding anniversary last year, and said it was amazing.

[WHAT’S] offers Matsusaka beef with class…
And they have a variety of styles too.
Apparently Matsusaka beef is a higher quality than Kobe beef. You hear about Kobe beef a lot in the west, but Matsusaka Beef is not so renowned.
Last year, they opened up a group restaurant in Gion called [WHAT’S THE KITCHEN]. The mature atmosphere and culinary delicacy is something difficult to describe in words. Their main concept here is beef sushi. That’s right folks… ITS RAW! The meat is so fresh, and so delicious that they are able to offer it uncooked.

Next we have our take-out shop.
[WHAT’S BEEF] −−−>>>>
Here you can take out Matsusaka beef hamburgers and homemade potato chips! Hmm mm.
The buns are baked with Matsusaka beef lard, instead of butter… How delicious does that sound?? I apologize to the vegans and vegetarians that are reading this… But personally, I’m a meat-lovin’ barbarian!

Lastly, Next month, a beef store will be opening up behind Daimaru along Nishiki Koji Street and Takakura. [WHAT’S THE Store]
I haven’t been yet, but I’m excited to see what they’ve got to offer here!

Sorry folks,
No English information, but you can give it a try.

Four Twenty (The Introduction of Modern Post in Japan) OR…… International “Burn Time”

In high school, I had a good friend whose birthday was April 20th.We would always crack jokes about what he was going to do that day, because in North America, April 20th, also knownas 420 (four twenty) is considered the National Pot Smokers Day. (In other words, anotherexcuse for pot heads to openly smoke marijuana in public places)

japan.jpg

In Japan,April 20th is the anniversary for the establishment of Japan Post in1871.

I have this little feature on my cell phone that displaysholidays of the world, but I guess the Japanese telecom companies didn’t knowwhat 420 stood for in the west!

I wascurious to find out more about the derivation of this holiday, so being theinternet junkie that I am, I googled it, and came up with a lot of truths andfalses concerning 420.

Myth: Police dispatch code for smoking pot is 420.

Fact: The number 420 is not police radio code foranything, anywhere. Checks of criminal codes suggest that the origin is neitherCalifornian nor federal. For instance, California Penal Code 420 defines as amisdemeanor the hindrance of use of public lands.

Myth: There are approximately 420 active chemicals inmarijuana.

Fact: There are approximately 315 active chemicals inmarijuana. This number goes up and down depending on which plant is used.

Myth: April 20th is National Pot Smokers Day.

Fact: Well, it is now; but that wasn't the origin.

Myth: April 20th is Hitler's birthday.

Fact: Yes, it is his birthday. But, as 420 started outas a time, not a date, his birthday had nothing to do with it.

Myth: April 20th is the date of the Columbine school shootings.

Fact: This happened after the term was already in use.

Myth: 4:20 is tea time for pot-smokers in Holland.

Fact: Tea time in Hollandis at 5:30 pm, or is it 2:30 pm? Seems no one is quite sure when the wonderfulpeople of Hollanddrink their tea.

Pretty crafty huh?

Let’s go dancing.

Pretty young girl french kisses fat old man on train

The other day, I was waiting to ride to work on the same 8 o’clockKeihan train to my office. Like every other morning, the same 60-something yearold dude with the outrageous comb-over in his wool pleated trousers was puffinghis cancer stick on the other side of the platform.

The young lady with the 1-point English textbook was in herown world, diligently repeating conversational phrases that we would never usein the native world.

“As cool as a cucumber..” “Its raining cats and dogs”…

Oh if someone could only teach her that nobody says “itsraining cats and dogs” anymore…

The young salary man in his spotless pin-stripe suite wasfiddling with his perfectly set hair and the group of high school student girlswere cracking up over some worry-free nonsense.

It was like every morning… the train came, I found a spacebetween the doors and the priority seats to place my bag down and start mymorning routine of “people watching.”

At the end of the bench seat, there was a young lady noddingoff while holding her umbrella in front of her. An overweight salary man thatlooked like he hadn’t showered in a couple days, maybe overworking, with foggyglasses from his natural body oils, I’m guessing about 45 years old, wasstanding in front of her. He kept himself standing by holding on to the trainstraps above. The man looked exhausted. He not once looked up; it seemed like hishead was dangling from his neck. I see he had fallen asleep as well, standingup. (You see a lot of this in Japan:Amazing to see them be able to wake up just in time for their stop)

Both of them had fallen asleep, as the train passed about 2stops. His body helplessly leaned over hers, as the train made somewhat of asharp turn.

The next moment, a blob of drool had fallen from his greasy disgustingmouth and accurately landed right on the back of the pretty young lady’s handthat was so gracefully placed on her pink and gold umbrella. In an instant, thegirl woke up, saw the drool, thinking it was her own, she quickly took her handand slurped the drool back into her own mouth….

Yeah… let that image sink in for bit…

Oh poor girl… little did she know..

She might as well French kissed the guy…

This has taught me never to fall asleep in a crowded morningrush hour train…. Ever!
